Avalanche Centre posts warning for weekend

The Canadian Avalanche Centre has issued an avalanche warning for Northern B.C.

Avalanche forecaster, Shannon Werner says the warning applies to the coastal and inland regions of the Northwest due to predicted warm weather this weekend.

“We are going to see a rapid change in the weather forecast. So we are going from a very wintery, stormy week of weather into a sunny and warm weekend. There are human factors that also play a role and also the snow pack doesn’t typically like a rapid change.”

Werner says people will be tempted to get out and enjoy the new snow and sunny skies but that combination could result in increased slide risks.

She says backcountry users will need to exercise extreme caution and have all necessary safety equipment and training.

She says over the past few days there has already been a lot of natural avalanche activity in the region.
