ICBC is cautioning it’s customers of text messages falsely claiming to be sent from them, following multiple customers report to have received the texts over the last couple of days.
The messages claim the receiver has been sent a refund for a traffic fine or red light ticket and provides a link to claim the money.
The link then sends the user to a site where they must enter personal banking information.
This form of scam is known as SMiShing.
Short for SMS phishing, the scam is meant to trick the user into unknowingly downloading malware onto their mobile device or sending the attacker person information.
ICBC is stressing to the public that it does not use channels such as texting or social media to deliver sensitive information to it’s customers, and that it does not issue refunds via text message or Interac e-transfer.
Anyone who receives this text is strongly urged to not open any links and delete the text immediately.
Those who have received the text are being encouraged to report the scam to their local police, and the Government of Canada’s Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
