UBCM endorses Telkwa’s grant ‘staking’ resolution

Telkwa’s resolution for more flexibility with federal grants was endorsed at the Union of BC Municipalities.

Mayor Darcy Repen says they need to be able to stack federal grants for core infrastructure projects.

He says not all communities have enough money to shift around in their budget.

“It’s logical, and again, it’s something that we brought up with the finance minister. It’s just the fairness component of this and that not all communities are on equal footing,” says Repen.

He says the aim is to allow more than 50 per cent in federal grants for a project. He says that would help the village with projects like the water tower and water infrastructure upgrades.

He hopes the issue will make its way to the federal government.
