Sisters in Spirit March in Houston today honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

A Sisters in Spirit March is making it’s way through Houston today to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Sisters in Spirit Vigils are held across the country every Oct 4th with today the 12th anniversary.

Tanya Brown with the friendship centre says violence against women is a hard-hitting issue for our area.

“It doesn’t just stop at the inquiry or on October 4th. This is something that our communities are dealing with every day and the impact on the community as a whole is very great,” says Brown.

The march in Houston also recognizes the residential school legacy with an orange and red theme, says Brown.

They’ll start marching at 3:30 this afternoon down the main highway and will end at Jamie Baxter Park for a blue balloon launch. The colour blue recognizes the Sisters in Spirit’s Grandmother Moon.

The national day is part of the Native Women’s Association of Canada.
