The town of Smithers’ move to make one type of residential garbage cart mandatory comes into effect next week.
Councillor Frank Wray says council decided four years ago to do this and has been offering discounts on this bins ever since.
He says in the long run, it saves tax payer dollars and is more convenient.
“We bought the haul-all truck that is designed to pick these garbage cans up,” he says. “WCB regulations have changed as for what the garbage collectors can lift personally. This takes most of the physical labour out of it and lowers our WCB rate.”
About 95 per cent of residents have already purchased their new garbage carts.
Those that don’t have one by next week will not have their trash picked up.
There are still bins available at town hall but no discount is offered anymore.
