Ice jam forming on Bulkley River

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is closely monitoring an ice jam that has formed on the Bulkley River.
The jam formed earlier this week downstream of Dohler Flats and is now approximately 14 kms in length.
Because of this, water levels on the river have increased in the affected area and will likely continue to fluctuate over the next week.
The ministry says jams that have historically formed at similar flows of this river currently, have resulted in localized over-bank flooding in some low-lying areas however they say making flood predictions at this point is difficult.
People should avoid low-lying areas of the riverbank and residents can contact the RDBN or Town of Smithers directly with flooding concerns.
