Bulkley Valley Towns Receive Grants-in-lieu of property taxes

A few communities in the Bulkley Valley area have received grants-in-lieu of property taxes this month.

The B.C government awarded Burns Lake, Hazelton, Houston and Smithers with funds for the services and support of public infrastructure each of these municipalities provide to the public.

“These grants-in-lieu cover land and property owned by the provincial government, such as office buildings, warehouses and courthouses. Local governments provide vital public services that benefit all members of their community,” said Minister of Citizens’ Services Jinny Sims. “They know their communities best and these grants help fund those priority projects.”

The amounts for each of the towns is as follows:

  • Burns Lake = $8,810.29
  • Hazelton = $24,714.70
  • Houston = $304.88
  • Smithers = $127,364.32

Grants-in-lieu of property taxes is distributed every November through The Ministry of Citizens’ Service.
