Smithers allowing residents to pay parking tickets with a toy

Do you have any outstanding parking tickets? Now, there may be a way to pay it off.

“Toy for Tickets” is back in Smithers, offering residents the opportunity to have their outstanding parking fees waived, in exchange for donating a toy of equal value.

Matt Davey, Provincial Community Safety Officer for the Town of Smithers, started the program four years ago after hearing about similar initiatives taking place in the lower mainland.

“I started the program a few years ago as its just a feel-good way to get some of the outstanding revenue back and give to a good cause”

All toys collected will support local families through the Christmas Hamper Program.

Christmas Hampers have brightened the season for residents of Smithers, Telkwa and Moricetown for many years.

Each year, the hampers provide food for a Christmas dinner to about 1,000 people.

Toys can be dropped off at either town hall or at the regional airport; all outstanding fines issued until December 15th are eligible to participate in the campaign.
