More than a hundred people came out to the new Smithers arena to see it officially opened last night.
Second Sheet of Ice Committee Project Manager Elizabeth Zweck says it was a a good feeling to see the ribbon cut on the new facility, especially because it was more than twenty years in the making.
“It kind of chokes you up after all this time,” she says. “It has been a lot of hard work by a lot of people and it is really thrilling to see all these people out and all the kids skating on the ice.”
The new arena, which sits beside the civic centre, features an NHL sized ice surface.
It is now open for public use and rentals.
