Smithers to pursue grant money for airport renos

Smithers council has decided to apply for funds for the airport terminal building expansion project.
Mayor Taylor Bachrach says councillors felt this was an important renovation to put forward to the Building Canada Fund Grant.
“Over the years we’ve found that with the current planes that are coming in, we are operating at capacity and coupled with that we are dealing with an old building with some real obvious deficiencies including the lack of a washroom in the hold room,” he says.
If successful, the federal government and the provincial government will each contribute one third of the cost, leaving Smithers with only a third to cough up.
The entire project is estimated to cost $4.5 million, meaning the town would have to borrow $1.5 million. The renos would include expansion, upgrades and bathrooms built in the holding area.
The town should know by the fall if the grant is approved
