Smithers will not chip away at new rules for logging truck parking

For the second Smithers town council meeting in a row, the issue of parking logging trucks overnight in residential areas was a hot topic.
A group of 12th Avenue residents have brought forward complaints about where their neighbour parks his rig and the noise it generates while the truck owner said he uses the quietest muffler he can buy.
Town staff presented a report of the noise and parking by-laws and council decided not to do anything about it because the rig owner wasn’t breaking any rules.
Councillor Phil Brienesse says they didn’t feel they needed to change by-laws to deal with one complaint.
“I felt there wasn’t a huge public outcry from the entire community,” he says. “And changing the whole by-law to deal with one incident felt like a sledge hammer approach.”
The truck owner did state he would park his vehicle further into his drive way to alleviate some of his neighbours’ safety concerns.
