The NDP MP for Skeena Bulkley Valley is calling on the federal government to present a plan in light of the falling oil prices.
Nathan Cullen, who is also the finance critic, says Canadians deserve an economic reality check.
“It’s something the government does on a regular basis, just tells the country what money is coming in and what money is going out,” he says. “Particularly because the Conservatives have promised away two billion dollars for an income splitting scheme that only helps the richest 15 per cent and yet every single Canadian is going to pay for it. Now we are running into the question of have the Conservatives spent the surplus before they even have a surplus?”
Cullen says he brought forward the motion to have the government present an update on the nation’s finances because the budget has been delayed.
Finance Minister Joe Oliver maintains the budget will balance in the spring.
