Northern Health looking at ways to improve health care in Houston

Northern Health has reviewed its services in Houston to see where improvements can be made.
The district is facing a looming doctor shortage with two pulling out in the summer.
Northwest Medical Director Dr. Geoff Appleton says they also looked into offering 24 hour health care but it wasn’t practical.
“It would be almost impossible to recruit physicians to cover that town 24/7,” he says. “The second reason is that the review looked at the number of people transferred to Smithers from Houston and that number was very small.”
Some recommendations that have come from the review include expanding the nursing services, collaborating further with B.C. Ambulance and getting at least two full time physicians to practice in the Houston Health Centre.
