The Independent Investigations Office is looking into an incident involving Smithers RCMP on Valentines Day.
Spokesperson Kellie Kilpatrick says police were called to a home around 10:30 pm and tried to take a man into custody when he became non-compliant so officers deployed OC spray before arresting him.
“Shortly after that, the affected person — the adult male stated he had trouble breathing,” she says. “Emergency health services attended and provided medical care to him but unfortunately he become unconscious.”
He was brought to the hospital where he remains today in serious condition.
The police watchdog was notified shortly after the incident and has sent investigators to Smithers today.
