Smithers council has chosen a design idea for a new sign that will be installed at the corner of Main St and Highway 16.
Chair of the Main Street Merchants Corina Brewer says the purpose is to direct people to the down town core.
“For the merchants, when we first proposed the idea was for people driving through Smithers, that they don’t just drive through Smithers but see this big beautiful sign, something that catches your eye and look to the left or the right, depending on what way you are coming and turn down Main Street,” she says.
Council directed staff last night to come up with some options for wording and design but councillors did agree to go with a timber frame concept.
Part of the money to pay for the sign is coming from an award that the town won last year for being open to business. The rest will be paid for Northern Development Initiative Economic Development Base grant. It will likely be installed by the main street festival scheduled for Father’s Day.
