Smithers Airport Update

It’s not very often that things go according to plan when it comes to construction, however, that is the case with the Smithers Aiport renovations.

Project Manager John Steward, appointed by the town of Smithers says it’s a breath of fresh-air working on a project like this.

“It’s actually going really well. We’re on schedule and within budget which is key for a project of this magnitude. We haven’t had many major issues to this point and that comes down to good management and communication.”

The project was originally estimated to cost $6 million, however, that number was increased to $9 million to make sure things were done right and on time.

“Phase 1 which includes the renovation of the new boarding lounge should be ready by June 2018. Phase 2 and 3 will make sure the existing building aesthetically matches the rest of the upgrades and should be finished by the first quarter of 2019.”

Steward says he visited the airport last week and was astounded by the progression of the project.

“People in the area needed this, it’s going to be beautiful. It will provide comfort for those coming to and from Smithers. It’s an upgrade that was needed to ensure our airport is state of the art.”

Upgrades include a new departure lounge, reconfiguration of the check-in, baggage claim and handling, as well as security areas, and an update to the heating and ventilation system.
