The Telkwa Caribou Recovery program has released a photo to the public of areas to avoid due to the Telkwa Caribou Recovery Program.

This is in spite of the fact that caribou numbers have been dwindling over the years, especially in the Telkwa area.

Since the 1900’s, caribou numbers in BC have seen a decline from nearly 40, 000 to 19, 000.

Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson says caribou are a national icon and we must preserve their population in BC.

“Simple steps like keeping in touch with the conservation office and listening to bulletins when accessing the back-country. Often times there are areas set aside for caribou that aren’t available to the public so we must be cognizant of their presence and our impact.”

In Early 2017, the Government of BC pledged $27 million dollars to the recovery of the 51 caribou herds in our province. Now, the BC Government is asking for your help.

“We have started the work on caribou recovery, but more needs to be done,” said Donaldson. “The provincial caribou recovery program will consider ways to reduce threats to caribou, while balancing the needs of all British Columbians, including Indigenous communities, industry, recreation enthusiasts and the public.”

The public is asked to share ideas and provide feedback before the June 15, 2018, deadline here.
