Trail Closure near Smithers due to high bear activity.

The town of Smithers has been forced to close sections of the perimeter trail from Willowvale subdivision to Ambleside, to Elks Park due to increased bear activity in the area.

Members of the public are cautioned to avoid the region until the closure is lifted.

With spring on the horizon, Bulkley Valley residents are asked to proceed with caution on back-country trails as bears awaken from hibernation.

Bears may be forced inwards towards communities due to their food sources being covered by snow. It is recommended that pet food is brought indoors, electric fences are installed around gardens or fruit bushes, and garbage is properly secured in bear-proof bins.
