Smithers car dealership receives ‘unexpected’ recognition

A Smithers business has won a provincial honour for giving back to local charities in its community.

Glacier Toyota is this year’s Northern region recipient of the Community Driver Award by the New Dealers Association of BC (NCDA).

The company raised more than $26,000 at last year during the Town’s Festival of Trees for the Salvation Army and Bulkley Valley Child Development Centre.

Glacier General Manager Scott Olesiuk says it’s an honour they were not expecting.

“It’s quite rewarding! We never knew it even existed as an award and to be nominated and accept the award it was amazing. It’s just a really great accomplishment by a lot of hard-working individuals and businesses in this Town to make it all happen.”

While he’s humbled by the NCDA recognition, Olesiuk believes this is about more than getting a shiny trophy for the office.

“We’re always creating and looking to find ways to give back, and also ensuring that we have the services and resources to support people in all walks of life and all different opportunities to get back. We’re always looking for those great things to better our Town.”

He adds the company’s involvement in the Festival of Trees has allowed them to raise more than $50,000 over three years for those same charities.
