The Travelling Healthcare Roadshow is currently touring Northern BC.

What may you ask is their message? Well, that would be to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in rural areas of the province by speaking to local high school students.

“It’s a grassroots initiative,” says Dr. Sean Maurice of UNBC “workforce shortages for healthcare professionals are something we certainly deal with in rural areas and we want to get high school kids thinking of potential career options.”

The Roadshow brings experts in fields such as medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, and dental hygiene. Medical students are also brought along as part of the tour with hopes they can relate to the students on a closer level.

“By adding youth presenters, it allows high school students see themselves in those positions. This program has been highly successful in terms of feedback. We constantly receive calls and emails thanking us for bringing such a great topic of conversation to the school. It really allows students to begin thinking about their future.”

Maurice says the goal of the tour is simple.

“We want to make sure students know the potential for careers is there. There is a shortage of healthcare professionals in rural areas and we want to mitigate that issue as best we can. These events are a great way to recruit for the future so we can tackle the workforce shortage in rural areas.”

While the goal of the tour is to educate the public, Maurice says there are other benefactors.

“It gives us as medical professionals a chance to interact and learn about one another while on the road. We get to learn what each profession has to offer while also checking out rural destinations such as Smithers to see what life could be like if we practiced here.”

The Healthcare Roadshow Tour will continue tomorrow in Dease Lake. They will also make stops in Watson Lake, Fort Nelson, and wrap up things in Prince George later this week.
