That’s right, Wynona Creyke from Smithers is heading to the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Membertou, Nova Scotia.
The games begin Sunday, May 6th and will conclude Saturday, May 12th.
Creyke is one of twenty female athletes that will not only represent BC, but they will also proudly represent their home communities at this national competition.
BC is also sending a men’s team to the championship’s as well.
The teams gathered at Delta Planet Ice on May 3rd for team practices and were first welcomed by Tsawwassen First Nation Elder Ruth Adams. Adams helped send the teams off with blessings and a song before they made their journey to Nova Scotia today. The athletes were also greeted by Métis Nation BC Ministry of Youth representatives Cassandra Dorgelo and Brittany Bertrand.
The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships is a showcasing of elite bantam and midget-age Indigenous hockey players from across Canada. It is the only annual national event that celebrates the athletic abilities of Indigenous athletes from across the country, and aids in fostering cultural unity and pride.
Creyke competed in last years National Aboriginal Hockey Championships and fell shy of winning it all losing to Saskatchewan in the semi-finals.
