ICYMI: Moricetown to Witset celebration taking place May 5th

It was back in October 2017 that the Moricetown Band Council decided to make a change.

The Moricetown Band Council will be now known as Witset, a name their ancestors gave to them.

Chief Victor Jim says “Witset means “first” or “before anyone”. Our ancestor’s were forced to change their name when moving out west to Keyikh Wigit, meaning ‘old’ or ‘ancient village’.”

The Band invites the public to join the historic celebration at the Multiplex on May 5th (tomorrow) from 10 am – 2 pm.

Event organizers say there will be many activities to take part in such as speeches, local music, a Bannock War, t-shirt painting, and the opportunity to take a photo with the school display ‘sggïgit k’in’a nïnt’ikh’ (fly like an eagle).

Children from grades 5-7 will also be hosting a fundraiser BBQ in support of their upcoming trip to Legislative Assembly.

“We as a village are very proud to return to our original village name, in what can
only be described as a marvelous act of indigenous sovereignty.” says Chief Victor Jim.
