Valley Youth Show opens May 15th at the Smithers Art Gallery

The Valley Youth Show is set to open tomorrow (May 15th) at the Smithers Art Gallery.

The free event takes place every two years and showcases art submissions from students in the area.

Acting Smithers Art Gallery Manager Shannon Finnegan explains what is going on.

“Students in the region from grades 8-12 had the chance to submit their pieces for viewing. This year, we have over 100 student submissions. These came from Smithers Secondary, Bulkley Valley Christian, Witset, and a homeschool. We know there is a wealth of artistic talent in the Bulkley Valley and that is why we do this show. ”

Finnegan says there will be a wide variety of art on display including pottery, charcoal drawings, oil paintings, and even a twist on the traditional rowing ore. She says the impact this gallery has on students is huge.

“This art show is a major step for students in the area,” says Finnegan,  “Some people have never even seen their work framed. It goes from something students are working on, to something they can be proud of. This showcasing will only encourage students to further pursue a passion for art.”

Finnegan says art is a universal language that speaks to everyone in different ways. If you’re looking to check out unique local talent, this is the event for you.

“We have some really talented submissions this year. Who knows, you may come to this gallery and find out in the future one these students has become quite famous in the art world.”
