Bulkley River downgraded to flood watch

The Bulkley River is now facing a flood watch as water levels have dipped since a flood warning was issued last week.

BC River Forecast Centre Section Head David Cameron, however, notes there is still a chance for levels to rise again.

“We’re kind of right into that transition period of maintaining the risk from the snowpack that’s there and so we do expect to see the potential for some rising levels over the next few days on the Bulkley,” he explains.

“This would be similar for tributary flows coming from the mountains in the area of the Telkwa and the tributaries downstream of Smithers.”

Campbell says the potential rise this week would be modest unless there is significant rainfall, which is not in the weather forecast.
