Houston reduces energy consumption during Earth Hour

Houston has made the top five for communities that saved the most electricity during Earth Hour.
Residents reduced the district’s normal energy consumption by 3.9 per cent during those 60 mins, which was much higher than the rest of the B.C.
BC Hydro spokesperson Simi Heer says across the province, British Columbians saved 15 megawatt hours of electricity or 0.2 per cent reduction in overall provincial load.

This equals about turning off 680,000 LED light bulbs.
“Earth Hour is really a symbolic event,” she says. “Any sort of savings is good news. BC Hydro relies on its savings through the power smart program so the good news is that customers continue to participate in those programs every year and we see participation by not only residential customers but by industrial customers as well.”
Other communities in the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District did not see any reduction in usage or were not measured during that hour.
