The RCMP and the Native Women’s Association of Canada are releasing a new poster with tips on safe hitchhiking.
Cst. Grant MacDonald of the Burns Lake RCMP says the posters will be distributed to communities along the Highway of Tears and aims to improve safety for women hitchhiking alone.
“It’s one of the recommendations that stem from the 2006 Highway of Tears Symposium. The RCMP is doing everything it can to enhance prevention, education and awareness around this subject matter.”
The poster advises women to always let someone know where they are going and when they have arrived, to only use busy roads, to have a cell phone in hand and to send a description of the vehicle and driver to someone else.
