Smithers mayor offers deal to attract arena donations

Fundraising for the new Smithers arena has come to the final big push.

Volunteers have been working to raise $400,000 and now have two weeks to raise the last $120,000.

So Smithers mayor, Taylor Bachrach is encouraging residents to give by offering to donate $100 for every personal donation of $1,000 made before April 15th – spending up to $1,000 himself.

“I have a young family and my kids and I and my wife use the arena. We really felt like it is a project that we need to support in our community.”

He says if the fundraising goal is met that will allow seating to be installed in the first phase of construction, otherwise bleachers might not be put in until later.

To make donations you can contact the fundraising committee or drop a donation off at town hall.

Individuals who donate one thousand or more will get their names on the plaque wall in the new arena.
