SD54’s Neighbourhood Learning Centre Consultation tonight in Smithers

A public consultation for the Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC) that will be added to the new Walnut Park Elementary School, will be held this evening at the SD54 School Board Office, at 7 PM.

SD54 Secretary Treasurer, Dave Margerm, explains what will be taking place this evening.

“As part of the new school project, the Ministry has provided some extra funding for additional space or what they refer to as a Neighbourhood Learning Centre. With this space, we are hoping to land partnerships within the community to develop something everyone can use or provide more learning spaces for the kids.”

Margerm added the NLC project is quite flexible. It can be additional learning environments integrated into the school or something to surround the new building.

One example of a potential use of space, would be an early childhood education area or daycare. Another example could be new athletic spaces added to the exterior.

Margerm says there isn’t one specific target demographic for this project, they are looking for everyone to come out and share their ideas.

“We’re looking for partners or stakeholders within the community to come out and lend their expertise. We want as many ideas as possible so everyone is welcome to attend. Residents, child care providers, athletic groups, or even members of the library as an example, are welcome to take part in tonight’s event.”
