Axe-swinging man sets car on fire

One man is in custody after swinging an axe on Highway 16 near Cedarvale.

On Sunday at 2pm, New Hazelton RCMP got word of a vehicle on fire on Highway 16 west of town.

North District RCMP Corporal Dave Tyreman says once on scene they saw the 39 year old man swinging the axe at passing motorists.

“Thank goodness nobody was injured. The RCMP are asking anyone who may have gone by and seen this man or seen the vehicle being put on the highway or set on fire, if you could give the RCMP a call at the New Hazelton detachment that would be great.”

Tyreman says the man fled when police arrived police and hid in a nearby house.

“Where police negotiated with him and successfully he came out and was arrested without incident. We are consulting with crown counsel in regards to charges.”

He says the charges include possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.
