Smithers council will be making changes to the parking requirements for the retail businesses along Main Street.
Last night council debated whether or not to decrease the requirements from one spot for every 60 square meters of shop space to one spot for every 180 square meters.
Some of the councillors argued the decrease in potential parking would be too extreme.
In the end Mayor Taylor Bachrach says council decided on a less dramatic reduction.
“We have passed a modified version of the motion that Councillor Phil Brienesse presented. And that covers downtown, really the area along Main Street between the Highway and Railway and we have reduced the parking requirement for retail businesses in that area.”
Council will now begin the process of amending the parking bylaw so that retail shops along Main Street must only provide one spot for every 100 square meters of store.
