Smithers new recycling liaison on the job

Smithers new recycling liason, Alexie Stephens was in council last night to introduce herself and provide an overview on the new program.

“Basically I am a disposal nerd. You can ask me anything about disposing anything in the province and I can give you a straight up answer. Nothing is too weird to recycle and that’s something I can help you with.”

Stephens says on the first day of recycling pickup 1,900 kilograms of material was diverted from the dump.

She says items that can now be recycled in the blue bins include plastic plant containers, take out coffee cups and aerosol containers.

Items that can’t be recycled curbside under the new program include glass, soft plastics like saran wrap and paperback books.

Stephens will be at town hall and community events for the next few months answering questions about recycling and MMBC.

She can also be reached at [email protected]
