Mining rescue competition set for Saturday

Mine rescue workers from all over BC will be at the Smithers Fairgrounds this weekend to showcase their skills.

The 59th annual Provincial Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition is this Saturday and features the regional champions in one final showdown.

Minister of Energy, Mines and Natural Gas, Bill Bennett says he will be in town for the competition.

“There are different kinds of skill-testing tests that the miners are put to. A lot of them involve first aid, dealing with fire, dealing with moving large objects without any kind of equipment. The kind of things that you could encounter on a mine site. It’s quite fascinating to watch what these guys and gals from the mining industry can do to keep themselves safe.”

Bennett says mining is the safest industry in Canada and it is fascinating to see what the industry’s rescue crews can do.

A banquet will follow the Saturday competition where the winners will be awarded trophies.
