Taxes in Smithers are going up

Taxes in Smithers are going up.
Councillor Phil Brienesse says residents will see a five per cent increase.
“Approximately 1.2 per cent of that can be attributed to the new arena,” he says. “We’ve also had some significant non-market growth in town, so that is new development, new housing, new commercial buildings that are providing additional revenue so we factored that in so it is also creating an increase.”
The total tax increases in the budget means the average household will pay an extra $71 this year.
Water and sewer fees also went up but garbage collection costs went down slightly.
