Nechako River now under Flood Watch

Residents are being asked to steer clear of all rivers this weekend as more flood watches are in effect, this time for the Nautley River near Fort Fraser and the Nechako River at Vanderhoof.

The warm weather continues to cause snow to melt and water levels to rise, leading the BC River Forecast Centre to upgrade these rivers from High Streamflow Advisory to Flood watches.

With the Bulkley River under a flood watch as well, BC River forecaster Dave Campbell says to avoid these rivers until late next week.

“We’re just starting to hit the times where we’re going to have depleted a lot of that critical snowpack that’s causing the issues right now. Some of our modelling suggests that we could hit that level next week,” he says.

Campbell also says to avoid any river banks for fear of collapse due to erosion.
