Smithers Fire MD Excellence Award Winner

Smithers Fire Department has been recognized by Muscular Dystrophy Canada for their fundraising work.

The local fire station was recently given the 2014 Award of Excellence for the “Top Single Department Event” after raising over $44,000 for the disease.

They money was raised by raffling off a Harley Davidson motorcycle, selling over 3500 tickets at $20 each.

Smither Deputy Fire Chief Kelly Zacharias says the money stays locally to help specific needs in the Bulkley Valley and NorthWest.

“It just depends, what each person needs that year. It could go to towards equipment, might be services, advocacy, goes into research to give these people hope for people affected with muscular Dystrophy disorder, that kind of thing,” he says.

Smithers donation helped the BC/Yukon Firefighters raise nearly $670,000 ($668,547) dollars for MD in 2014.
