Bachrach home from Governor General’s Conference

Smithers Mayor Taylor Bachrach returned home from his cross-country adventure Monday night.

The mayor took part in the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference, which held every 3 years for “emerging leaders” in Canada.

The mayor and his group of leaders mostly came from corporate, labour, and government background. The group spent up to 14 hours a day touring Manitoba and learning about the province’s challenges and opportunities.

After completing the conference, Bachrach is looking forward to being and alumni and contributing to future events.

“I would love in 2017, fi we could bring them here to Smithers and show emerging leaders from across Canada what we’re doing in our community because I’m really proud of it and I think they’d learn a lot,” he says.

Bachrach says, despite the size of Canada, he saw a lot of similarities through his travels.

“Reflecting on it I think the biggest learning is that small towns are small town all across Canada and they face many of the same issues, but at their heart they have people who care about the places they live and are dedicated to making things better.”

Bachrach said he plans to incorporate his experiences into the upcoming Council meetings.
