COVID-19 cases on a downward slope in Smithers Local Health Area

COVID-19 cases have decreased within the Smithers Local Health Area, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.

12 new cases were identified in the region from November 28 to Dec 4 compared to 27 reported the previous week.

Meanwhile, in the Burns Lake Local Health Area eight new cases were reported which is a slight increase from five cases the previous period.

Case rates have declined in the Smithers LHA but have increased in the Burns Lake region during this period.

10 cases are reported per 100,000 people in the Smithers according to the BCCDC but in the Burns Lake area 14 new cases are being reported per 100,000.

In terms of vaccination rates, those 12 and older in the Smithers LHA 76% of community members 12 and older are fully vaccinated with 81% having one dose.

Meanwhile, 8% of kids 5 to 11 have had one dose of a COVID-19 pediatric vaccine.

In the Burns Lake region, 74% of residents have had both doses of a vaccine and 79% are partially vaccinated.

Additionally, 14% of children 5 to 11 have had their first dose of a vaccine.
