Stikine MLA calls for review on arrests in Hazelton

Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen has written a letter to RCMP’s top officer after a video was released where two residents were arrested with force in the Gitxsan area.

Cullen called the video disturbing and that concerns have been raised regarding enforcement actions addressing protests during meetings being held within the constituency.

In the December 3 letter, he is asking for Commissioner Brenda Lucki to review police actions during these arrests while considering what actions might be constituted as necessary during enforcement.

This letter comes after Cullen was issued an eviction notice by Gitxsan Huwlip Government stating there was a failure to ensure safety for the constituents.

According to a Facebook post by Cullen, Lucki responded stating she could not go into specifics but the incident in question is being investigated.

“In some cases, force must be used to resolve the conflict. When required to do so, police officers will use as much force as is necessary to resolve the manner,” she said.

Cullen added he will be passing on the response to the Wet’suwet’en and Gitxsan chiefs so, they can discuss next steps.
