COVID-19 activity decreases in Smithers, Burns Lake

COVID-19 cases within the Smithers and Burns Lake Local Health Areas have declined according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.

Seven new cases were reported in the Smithers region from December 5 to 11.

Meanwhile, the Burns Lake LHA has identified three new cases of COVID-19 during this period.

Case rates in both regions have continued to go down with the Smithers region identifying 3 cases per 100,000 people and the Burns Lake LHA reporting 7 cases per 100,000.

Vaccination rates have also continued to remain steady in both regions.

In the Smithers LHA, 76% of community members are fully vaccinated and 81% have had a single dose of a vaccine.

Additionally, children 5 to 11 have been receiving their first dose.

14% of children 5 to 11 have received a single dose of a vaccine.

In the Burns Lake Local Health Area, 74% of people have had both doses of a vaccine and 79% are partially vaccinated.

The region continues to have a large amount of children getting vaccinated with the vaccination rate at 19%.
