Smithers RCMP have received many phone calls recently regarding a believed phone scam.
Callers say they are Hydro workers and demand immediate payment or their power will be cuff off.
BC Hydro Spokesperson Mora Scott says this is not how the company handles payments.
“First, we don’t collect credit card or bank account information over the phone and we don’t accept payment from prepaid cash or credit cards over the phone,” she says, “if [someone owes money] BC Hydro will send several notices by mail and use an auto-dialer to remind our customers to make payments.”
Both BC Hydro and Smithers RCMP discourage anyone from provIding personal information over the phone.
If you receive this call, hang up and inform the police.
