The Town of Smithers had a busy year in 2021, according to Mayor Gladys Atrill.

“While that may not seem exciting to many it really is a big piece of work for a local government and it was initiated and we have a consultant working with our staff and lots of community outreach and that will complete in 2022,” she said.
According to Atrill, a big opportunity for Smithers was hosting the Netflix production The Mother, which features Jennifer Lopez.
She added a thank you to Netflix and to the cast and crew of the film production.
Meanwhile, Atrill added the Town identified some struggles this year.
One of the major challenges was in regards to housing.
She said that improving the housing within the community is on her radar.
“I am looking forward to working with community and provincial entities on what we do better, how we are going to deal with the folks that are most vulnerable in our community considering the housing crunch that we’re in,” Atrill said.
The first meeting in the New Year will be held on January 11.
