Hazard Notice in effect near the Bulkley River due to Ice Jams

A Hazard Notice has been issued by the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, Town of Smithers and the Village of Telkwa because of a growing concern of ice jams along the Bulkley River. 

The notice was issued at 1 p.m. and has been issued for all low-lying areas adjacent to the Bulkley River. 

Residents are being advised for potential of flooding in these areas.

It is recommended that residents exercise extreme caution or limit recreation near and around the area.

The town has provided some recommendations and how to prepare for property flooding: 

  • Move equipment and other belongings susceptible to water damage to higher ground
  • Move pets and livestock to a safe area
  • Gathering essential items such as food, water, medications and immediate care needs to sustain you and your dependents for up to seven days.

Anyone looking for more information is being advised to contact the Regional District, the Town of Smithers or the Village of Telkwa.
