COVID-19 cases increase in the Smithers Local Health Area

COVID-19 cases in the Smithers Local Health Area have jumped according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.

This is as the province is breaking records for daily cases of the virus being identified.

55 new cases were reported from December 19 to 25, which is a significant jump from four the previous week.

Meanwhile, in the Burns Lake LHA two new cases were identified.

The Smithers region’s case rate also jumped to 71 cases being identified per 100,000 people and in Burns Lake there are three cases being identified per 100,000 people.

As for vaccination rates 77% of those 12 and older in the Smithers LHA are fully vaccinated and 82% have had a single dose.

Additionally, 20% of children in the Smithers area have had a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

As for the Burns Lake region, 75% of those 12 and over have had both doses of a vaccine and 79% are partially vaccinated.

For children 5 to 11 in the region, 25% have had their first dose of a vaccine.

On Thursday (Dec 30), the province broke its daily case record with 4,383 new cases reported.
