School District 54 respond to delayed return to school

School District 54 has announced some details regarding the return to class after the winter break. 

This is as public health officials announced that kids will not be going back to school until January 10 and that it will be in a phased approach. 

In a letter to staff, parents and students Superintendent Mike McDiarmid issued what the return to class will look like.

During the week of January 4 to 7 school will be open for a limited number of students with specific needs.

The letter added that parents can contact the school board to request their child attend school next week if they fall under the specific needs. 

This includes: 

  • Students with diverse disabilities who require support at this time
  •  Students who are considered vulnerable 
  • Students whose parents are an essential worker and require childcare 

The letter also said there will be learning activities during this week but will not be considered the regular instruction.

It also added the delay in returning to class is to implement new safety measures for staff, students and parents and to assess the new Omicron variant.
