Two provincial court judges appointed for the North

The province has appointed two new provincial court judges for the North.

Nina Purewal will sit in the region and her appointment will help facilitate the ongoing Northern Bail Pilot project.

She holds a law degree from University of Victoria, graduating in 2005 and a master’s degree in international human rights from Oxford University in 2013.

According to the province, she has worked for Pivot Legal Society and in the human rights field in Tanzania.

Additionally, she has worked as a provincial government child and youth advocate as duty counsel and Crown counsel in the Smithers office.

Meanwhile, in Quesnel Scott Mulder will serve as the sole judge.

This will fill the role that was vacated by the resident judge upon his retirement.

The province says Mulder has 22 years of experience in family and criminal law throughout the North which includes, working as counsel for the Nisga’a Lisims Government in child protection matters.

He grew up in the Kitimat area and articled and practiced in Terrace.

Mulder and Purewal begin their new positions on January 31.
