Town buys Land for Affordable Housing

The Town of Smithers has purchased downtown property to secure more affordable housing.

The two 25-foot lots are located at 3888 and 3896 Railway Avenue (near Queen), adjacent to the Town Hall parking lot.

The purchase will help Council’s priority of creating affordable and supportive housing, especially for those facing mental illness and addictions

“In the years that I’ve worked for the town of Smithers, we’ve always had a low vacancy rate ,” says Smithers CAO Deborah Sargent, “and it’s something that many councils, including this council, [have been] concerned with. With a low vanacy rate, you often have issues with afforadbility.”

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says that creating affordable housing is one of Council’s “highest priority.”

The town will not plan to build on this land but intends to work with local agencies to create the new residences.
