Updated Property Maintenance Bylaw to have “more teeth”

Town Council visited the property maintenance bylaw Tuesday night, with the intention of updating it for the first time since 1990.

Council will now passed the first two readings of the bylaw to now include consequences to for those with unkempt lawns and decaying waste on properties.

The next step is for staff to bring an amended bylaw to a future council meeting for the final readings.

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says the amendment is to clarify any confusing wording.

“We need a bylaw that’s transparent, that has a clearly laid out enforcement procedure,” he says.

Penalties could include fines between $100 and $10,000-dollars, and extreme cases could mean 6-months in jail.

The bylaw’s third and final reading will be in the near future.
