Classical music festival to return to Smithers

The Spirit of the North Classical Music Festival is returning in its full capacity in Smithers this week.

There will be in person and live streamed events with its opening concert starting on Wednesday (Aug 10) at the Bethel Church.

The concert will feature the Orchestra North Residency Quartet who will be playing Schubert’s Cello Quintet D956.

Last year, the event had a scaled down version because of the pandemic which, according to organizer Roxi Dykstra, was well attended.

She said that community members did miss the atmosphere of the full event.

“People have missed being able to experience live music together. It is such an important part that brings us together as a community. We had a lot of people really asking when we would be able to do a full festival again,” Dykstra said.

She added that not only is there classical music there will also be folk music as well.

Dykstra also said why this festival is so special. .

“There’s very few festivals that celebrate classical music in its more traditional form and bring in traditional music like fiddling and folk along with classical music that demonstrates that this is part of the traditions that our music making today comes from,” she said.

There will be concerts held at Bulkley Valley Brewery, Mountain Eagle Books and at the Bulkley Valley Museum.

Additionally, there will be a festival highlight being held in Prince George on Sunday evening (Aug 14).

Information on events can be found on the events website and tickets are available at the door or can be purchased in advance.
