Boville Square vandalized, arrest made

The stage at Boville Square was among areas seen with graffiti this morning (Tuesday).

It is expected to have happened between yesterday evening (Monday) and this morning (Tuesday).

The stage, located at Main Street and Broadway was seen with blue spray paint and with garbage looking like burnt cardboard was found.

Police say an arrest was made in the afternoon and charges are pending.

Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill said she felt a mixture of emotion when she realized that the square was defaced.

“The square has been something that we at the Town have been trying to activate again, trying to get people to use the square, so it’s very disappointing and very upsetting to see that action,” she said.

Atrill added that seeing behaviour like this is a concern to her.

She also recognized the quick response from Town Staff.

“I have to give kudos to the Town Staff who were out there pretty quickly to take the marks off the stage, we still have some work to do but the paint was removed,” she said.

According to Atrill, at this time there are no plans to install security cameras at the square.

This is not the first time the square was defaced, it was vandalized in July 2020 with black spray paint on the stage.
