Casda Thomas says she won’t seek re-election

Smithers Town Councillor Casda Thomas has announced that she will not be running for re-election.

She was elected in 2018 and served one term.

According to Thomas, this was a hard decision for her to make.

“I thought that I would end up running for another term. I thought that I would run because I am proud of the work I’ve done and there is more I want to do for this community,” she said.

Her decision to not run again is because of family, friends and needed self-care.

“The closer the election came, the more I thought about how hard it’s been to work a day job and then devote many hours to council,” Thomas said.

She added that she loved being a councillor over the last four years.

Thomas is not the only council member to not seek re-election Mika Meyer, Greg Brown and Lorne Benson have all said they will be stepping down.

Meanwhile, Frank Wray and John Buikema will be running once again for a council seat.

As of Friday morning (Sept 9), Nick Briere, Calvin Elliott, Laura Leonard, Jason McCrindle and Sam Raven were also in the running for council.

For the Mayor spot incumbent Gladys Atrill will be running once again and is up against Murray Hawse.

The full list of candidates will be available on the Town of Smithers website shortly after 4pm this afternoon.

General Election day is on October 15.
